GEORGETOWN (DC)
Georgetown is a community that really captures the prestigious nature of Washington, DC. It’s beautiful – from scenic parks to its stunning homes. It’s popular with tourists who come to see the area, but it’s a fashion-forward, affluent community for those who live here. The streetscapes are beautiful as historical architecture lines them and well-maintained gardens dominate.
Georgetown real estate includes some of the oldest homes in the region. It’s also home to exclusive rowhouses and mansions, many of which have a long history of ownership. Stately mansions, many of which have been renovated and updated, as well as quite small row homes, line the streets. It’s possible to find condos and apartments here, too. Some modern and industrial-style lofts exist, especially along the waterfront (the neighborhood abuts the Potomac River) as well as along the canal.

Georgetown has a very distinct elegance to it. During its growth in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, much of the community built up as Washington DC grew. It’s long been known for its universities and college prep programs. There’s no doubt that many who live in this affluent community do so because of its location, but it’s also scenic, with beautiful architecture, upscale dining, and manicured parks.
For tourists, the area is all about shopping and seeing the sites. There are some outstanding boutiques and lifestyle shops around virtually every corner for residents. It also offers easy access to the trails and parks, providing morning runs and long walks with the dog each evening. People are busy here, but there’s a positive energy that’s hard to overlook.
DINING, ENTERTAINMENT & SHOPPING:
A historic location serving the area for over 100 years, Martin’s Tavern is an exceptional place to visit for a drink, especially tucking away into one of the wooden booths for long conservations and good American fare. From the grand staircase at its entrance to the Prix-fixe menu, Tasting Room is a truly elegant establishment. Baked & Wired is the place to go for something more upbeat and full of energy. It’s the ideal place for coffee and freshly baked goods.
Another elegant choice is Filomena Ristorante, a classic Italian restaurant that’s served the area for over 30 years. An outstanding choice for lunch or dinner, Fiola Mare offers private dining areas for groups as well as some of the best seafood in the region. Or, consider the farmer-owned sustainable restaurant that’s noted for its hand-crafted drinks. Farmers Fishers Bakers is also an excellent choice for breakfast.
THINGS TO DO:
There’s much to love about Georgetown, including the waterfront. Walking along the area, watching the sunset, and simply taking in the history of the Potomac River is truly refreshing. There’s also quite a bit of culture to take in here, including at Dumbarton House, a 300-year old property, and the Dumbarton Concerts, perfect for jazz music lovers. Explore the entire area’s history through the Dumbarton Oaks Museum. Gaston Hall is an auditorium at Healy Hall in Georgetown University that’s full of historic charm. Another cultural experience to have is at Tutor Place Historic House and Garden.
Creatives love the vibe at Fostr, which provides space to support a wide range of projects. On the other hand, some may just want to get out to have some fun. Volta Park Recreation Center makes that possible.
